Limited Capacity seats available

The Everglades is a completely unique ecosystem sandwiched by massive metropolitan areas. Preserving it has been a dance between special monied interests, craven politicians, and environmentalists. This short doc interviews Michael Frank and Renee Manyari, two members of the Miccosukee Tribe's Otter Clan about how their lives are affected by pollution from Florida's agriculture industries. These are two people literally born from the glades. Special attention is also given to the place Native Americans have (or have been given) in modern US society, and if further reparations are deserved in the mind of the viewer.

Rilla Hops: The Documentary
Meet Caleb, Gareth, and Jeff- three guys turned best friends thanks to their mutual love of running around and jumping on things. After years of simply training together and having fun, the three decided that if no one was going give them opportunities, they were going to make their own- and thus from the cavernous vacuity of obscurity emerged a new team- a team they fondly named 'Team Rilla Hops', after a previous video they had made together. One of the things that makes Team Rilla Hops so unique is the fact that it includes two girls- Lorena and Niki- who practice parkour the same as guys (as opposed to the variations of gymnastics you usually see coming from other girls in the sport). One of the most common misconceptions about this sport is that 'Free-Running' involves flips and tricks, whereas 'Parkour' capitalizes exclusively on efficiency. The guys reveal that there is no actual difference between the two, its all about the art of getting from point A to point B.Another misconception is that it is extremely dangerous and reckless- when in reality, injuries don't actually occur very often, thanks to safety precautions and refined techniques. The goals and dreams of Team Rilla Hops are nothing more than to be able to make a living out of doing what they love and travel the world. The journey has just begun and we are all very excited to see where it is going to take them in the future. Runtime: 8 min.

1969. Man lands on the moon. Half a million strong at Woodstock. Sesame Street makes its debut...and Led Zeppelin perform in the gym of the Wheaton Youth Center in front of 50 confused teenagers. Led Zeppelin Played Here presents a mid-Atlantic version of what was happening nationwide as the rock concert industry took shape. Featuring interviews with rock writers, musicians, and fans, and several who claim they were witnessing history that night. 'Zeppelin-in-Wheaton is Washington's own rock-and-roll Loch Ness Monster. Love is a Verb
Narrated by: Ashley Judd. Love Is A Verb is an examination of a social movement of Sufi inspired Sunni Muslims that began in Turkey in the l960s and now reaches across the globe. The group is called Hizmet, the Turkish word for service or The Gulen Movement after its inspiration, leader and beloved teacher Fethullah Gulen, a man that Time Magazine named as one of the most influential leaders in the world in 2013. Through a co-operation with the people inspired by Gulen, we had an unprecedented access to the ideas and actions of the movement around the world. We met teachers who crawled through a tunnel to open a school in Sarajevo during the war and the students whose lives they changed. We met a Sufi conductor whose orchestra is composed of children whose parents were once at war. We got a glimpse of the interfaith work the movement provides in Turkey, including a visit to Rumi's exquisite shrine. We went to their schools in Turkey, in Somalia, in Iraq. We meet a Kurdish teacher in Iraq who credits everything she is to her former Turkish teachers who stayed during the bombings, and a Kurdish woman who had also gone to one of the Turkish schools in Iraq and is now working as an engineer to bring water to the dessert. Finally, in Somalia we follow two Turkish doctors putting their lives at risk in a place where other relief organizations have deemed too dangerous, a place where they sleep under armed guard. Runtime: 55 min.

Oil & Water
An oil documentary like no other, Oil & Water follows George & Carol Terrebonne in the four years following the BP oil spill. Despite coming close to losing their shrimp processing business, they remain in support of the oil and gas industry, which has become part of Cajun culture over the course of its more than 100 year history in the state. But as compounding factors related to oil and gas production threaten the seafood, their livelihood, and the very land they live on, they are forced to deal with the harsh reality that the future of their way of life is in jeopardy.

Their story is told in the context of the broader history of Cajuns and the oil industry, from its first migration to Louisiana from Texas in the early 1900's to the emergence of deepwater technology in the 1980's and on up through the BP disaster and aftermath, offering a unique perspective at the complex relationships between the industry, fishing and residents of the coast. They Are We
Special Guest Film Introduction by: Chief Nathaniel B. Styles, Jr.

Can a family separated by the transatlantic slave trade sing and dance its way back together? In Perico, Cuba an Afro-Cuban group has kept alive songs and dances that their ancestor, known only as Josefa, brought aboard the slave ship from Africa. They preserved them proudly despite slavery, poverty and repression.  Through years of searching, filmmaker Emma Christopher tried to find their origins.  Then, in a remote village in Sierra Leone, people watched a recording of the Cubans' festival, joined in their songs, and said joyously, 'They Are We!'  Finally, the Africans said, their lost but never forgotten family was coming home. This is a movie of survival against the odds and how shared humanity can ultimately triumph over any number of years' separation.

A tale of two mothers and daughters, one imaginary (Roya and Darya), the other real (Azar and Nina) sharing a cell in prison. Roya is a young sketch artist who was arrested on the day her exhibit was to open in Tehran. And Azar is a young mother incarcerated with her young daughter Nina in Evin prison. The stuff of the film's narrative is a combination of reality and imagination; it uses Roya's designs (of infant Nina's first steps in prison to her own appearance before the Death Committee) to describe the shocking story of political prisoners killed by Khomeini's Fatwa in 1988, and buried in unmarked mass graves in Khavaran. Does Darya, the imaginary daughter of Roya, get the chance to fulfill her mother's wishes by finding Nina and retrieving the lost sketches of her own childhood in prison?

South Florida's Rising Seas
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers predicts sea levels in South Florida will rise from 3-7 inches by the year 2030 and from 9-24 inches by the year 2060. Such changes would mean daunting challenges for South Florida communities to stay habitable. This theme, explored in the groundbreaking documentary, “South Florida’s Rising Seas,” produced by Florida International University School of Journalism and Mass Communication professors Kate MacMillin, an award-winning TV producer, and Juliet Pinto, a journalism associate professor whose research focuses on environmental communication. 'We could not be more pleased with the documentary produced by our two professors with the intent of informing the South Florida community of such an important topic as is sea-level rise. They did an outstanding job of going deep into a subject that is often misunderstood but that is a reality for our area,” said SJMC Dean Raul Reis. These two pioneering filmmakers took on the issue of sea level rise, a difficult issue to turn into a compelling, visual narrative. Shot on location in South Florida, the inspiring half-hour production, 'South Florida's Rising Seas”, uses vivid video and interviews with geologists, engineers, lawyers, community leaders and environmental activists to explain the potential threat to South Florida and what's being done. They also put together a team of concerned citizens, with nothing more than a shoestring budget, and delivered professional results. Local award-winning composer, Dan Gralick, designed the music, and summa cum laude SJMC graduate Jonathan Shaffer was the associate producer. WPBT2 contributed animations.
